3 Different Types of Braces

Oct 16, 2023

A person's smile is often a big source of confidence as it's one of the first things people notice. When you're insecure about your teeth, it can affect your mood and self-esteem. One of the most common types of treatments used to straighten teeth is braces. In fact, according to the American Association of Orthodontists, about 4 million Americans wear braces. If you're curious about the different types available and how they can help you, then keep reading.

1. Metal Braces

Metal braces are the type most people are familiar with. This is likely what you saw on other kids growing up or even on TV shows and movies. They're made with stainless steel, and orthodontists adhere a bracket to each tooth and use a wire to connect them. This gently shifts teeth into position over time. While they may have been clunky and maybe even uncomfortable in the past, the technology has improved significantly over the years. They're now made to be smaller, less noticeable, and more comfortable.

2. Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are also known as clear braces because they're nearly translucent, which makes them less noticeable. If you're concerned with how your smile will look during treatment, then this is a more attractive option. They aren't invisible, but they're made to blend in with the color of your teeth. Ceramic braces work the same as metal braces, with the use of wire and brackets, but they're typically a bit more fragile.

3. Clear Aligners

Not to be confused with clear braces, clear aligners use a different method to straighten teeth. Rather than wire being used to shift teeth into position, clear aligners are custom-made molds made of plastic. Your teeth will shift to fit the mold, and every couple of weeks or so you'll get a new aligner. Your teeth will then shift to fit that one, and so on and so forth until you reach the desired effect. Most orthodontists carry Invisalign and ClearCorrect, which are both trusted brands. Clear aligners are considered the most visually appealing option because they're nearly invisible.
