Common Orthodontic Issues

There are lots of common orthodontic issues our orthodontist can treat, typically in the form of malocclusion (bad bites) or misaligned teeth. Dr. Bertha Dieguez will determine what problems you're facing and will create a customized treatment plan to improve your smile. Read on to find out about some of the common orthodontic issues we treat at Dieguez Smiles Orthodontics, or contact one of our offices in Birmingham or Fairfield today to schedule a FREE consultation!

Crowded Teeth

Crowded teeth are when your teeth come in too close together and as a result, overlap or become crooked. Braces can usually correct this problem.

Open Bite

An open bite is when the front teeth do not meet. This is sometimes caused by habitual thumb sucking. Braces and special appliances can be used to correct open bites.

Deep Overbite

A deep overbite is when the lower front teeth bite into the palate. This problem typically requires braces and a jaw surgery in adults, but teenagers may be able to correct this bad bite without the need for surgery.

Missing Lateral Incisors

When a patient's lateral incisors are missing, the orthodontist may recommend braces in order to move the remaining teeth into the correct positions. After that, a dental bridge or other restorative treatment may be required to close the gaps between teeth.

Underbite

An underbite is when the lower front teeth are in front of the upper front teeth. This bite problem can lead to jaw joint discomfort and extreme wear to the teeth. Treatment for an underbite may include removable appliances and braces.

Spacing of Teeth

Teeth may sometimes have excessive space between them, a problem that is easily fixed with braces. After treatment, special retainers can be glued in to help teeth maintain their positions.

Overjet

Overjets, also known as protruding teeth, may be corrected through either alignment of the teeth and bite or treatment to help the jaw grow properly.

Non-Braces Treatment

Some orthodontic problems do not call for braces to correct. We offer a number of non-braces treatments to help straighten teeth or resolve other orthodontic issues.

Phase One

Phase one of orthodontic treatment may require the use of palatal expanders and partial braces as well as other things. Phase one is typically provided to young children once their permanent teeth begin erupting.

Emergency Orthodontic Care

You can count on Dieguez Smiles Orthodontics for emergency orthodontic care in Birmingham and Fairfield, AL! If you're experiencing an orthodontic emergency, contact us immediately. If any pieces of your appliances have broken off, please save them and bring them to your appointment.

What Should I Do If I Experience an Orthodontic Emergency?

If you're experiencing an emergency such as a broken or lost appliance, please call our office as soon as possible. Let us know immediately that you need an appliance repaired. At that time, we can also provide you with any necessary instructions on what to do until you can visit our office.

Loose Brackets or Bands

If a bracket, band, or wire comes loose, please contact us immediately as brackets may need to be refitted. If you have to cut a wire in case of an emergency, we recommend you use fingernail clippers that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol. You may also need to slide a bracket off at night or over a weekend until you're able to visit our office. Call us right away so we can schedule an appointment.

Poking Wires or Wire Irritations

If a wire is irritating your cheeks or gums, move it away from the area using a cotton swab or eraser. If you cannot move the wire, cover the end with a small piece of wax or cotton to relieve the discomfort. If the wire is still painful, you can cut it with nail clippers or scissors that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol. If you need to cut the wire or cannot fix the wire irritation, contact us to make an appointment.

Lost Separators

It is common to lose a separator during your treatment. If this happens to you, call our office to find out if it needs to be replaced.

Braces or Orthodontic Treatment Discomfort

You will feel soreness and discomfort in the first week after your braces are installed and after routine adjustments. This is normal and there is no need to worry. You may take acetaminophen or ibuprofen to relieve pain when your teeth are sore. You may also opt to use a warm washcloth or heating pad to reduce soreness in your jaws.
